What is UMF?
Unique Manuka Factor
Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is additional antibacterial found only in certain batches of Manuka Honey. UMF rated Manuka honey has been tested to be effective for stomach ulcer, kill antibiotic resistance bacteria and approved by US FDA as a wound care application.
How the UMF rating is tested?
The UMF level is tested in accredited laboratory in New Zealand. The test is a measurement of non-peroxide activity in the honey by comparing the honey's anti-bacterial property to common disinfectant, Phenol. For example, Manuka honey tested to have the same anti-bacterial strength as 10% phenol solution will be rated as UMF10 Manuka Honey. According to Professor Peter Molan of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, Manuka honey with UMF level of 10 or above is considered to be effective against stomach ulcer and clearing of infection. The higher the UMF level, the stronger the antibacterial potency of the Manuka Honey.
