Advantages of UMF

Manuka Honey UMF's antibacterial property is stable and heat resistant

While regular honey kills bacteria mainly by hydrogen peroxide produced by enzyme, UMF Manuka honey kills bacteria via non-peroxide activity. The enzyme that produced hydrogen peroxide is light and heat sensitive. Therefore, exposure to light and heat will reduce the antibacterial potential of regular honey.

Since UMF Manuka honey kills bacterial via non-peroxide activity, it is heat stable and insensitive to light. It is because of the very stable antibacterial profile of UMF Manuka honey that makes UMF Manuka Honey very effective against bacterial. This stable property also ensure that long term storage of UMF Manuka honey will not destroy or reduce the antibacterial potency. UMF rated Manuka honey is the only honey to be approved by US FDA as wound care application.

UMF is not degraded by catalase enzyme found in our body

Catalase enzyme presence in our body will destroy or reduce hydrogen peroxide, a major antibacterial component of regular honey. When hydrogen peroxide is produced and interacted with catalase enzyme, the hydrogen peroxide will lose its antibacterial effectiveness. In addition, when proteinase, enzymes that breaks down protein, interacts with the enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide, it further eliminates the antibacterial potential of regular honey. Both catalase enzyme and proteinase, are commonly present in would fluid.

In comparison, UMF Manuka honey are not affected or influenced by the above enzyme. Therefore its antibacterial potency is reduced by exposure to catalase enzyme or proteinase.

UMF antibacterial property it "ON" at all times

Regular honey kills bacteria upon dilution. Meaning that the honey only becomes activated to kill bacterial when they are diluted. The dilution of honey allows hydrogen peroxide producing enzyme to be turned from "Off" to "On", thereby producing hydrogen peroxide, the main factor that kills bacteria in regular honey.

In contrast, Manuka UMF honey is "On" at all times with or without dilution. It does not require to be diluted to kill bacterial. Therefore, UMF Manuka honey is a concentrated fluid with low moisture contain that penetrate deep into tissue and yet kills bacteria.

UMF Manuka honey can kill antibiotic resistance bacteria

Research has shown that UMF Manuka honey can inhibit and kill antibiotic resistance bacterial. The actual mechanism of inhibiting and killing is not known yet.
